“It’s your crocodile”.
This is something I say a lot to my kids during a crisis. Because when they're feeling big emotions they must recognise what's happening before they can process and manage the feeling: when they understand what's happening they can get back in touch with their rational brain.
When I tell them, I do like this with my hand: it's like the crest of a crocodile (representing their reptilian brain) and they know what it means.

Understanding how the brain works and using the crocodile hand helps parents break the myth of tantrums, and kids recognise what's happening in their body and process feeling in a constructive way.
If you are interested in learning more and understating how to explain all of this to your kids, please take a look at my mini course "It's Your Crocodile" — you can find it in the shop.
