Babybjörn Carrier One review

I’ve never been the classic kangaroo mum, but with Oliver I tried the Babybjorn Carrier One and I liked it. I liked the design, it’s simple and minimalistic enough that my husband would use it, too.

It’s not exactly ergonomic as advertised, because even if the semi rigid back follows the natural curve of the spine, the baby is not in the recommended C position. But Oliver’s legs do not dangle, they are wide open and the butt is slightly lower than the knees, which is important, especially for boys, so that the weight is not unloaded on the genitals.

Even so, though, I wouldn’t recommend it before the baby is 5-6 months: before, I’d use a classic sling which ensures the correct position of the newborn.

Although I haven’t used it much (I’ve always been more of a stroller mom), I must admit that, especially at home—with a child like Oliver that at three and a half months already weighed more than 7 kg—this carrier helped me a lot in those afternoons when Oliver just wanted to be in my arms, and it was a back saviour!

These are my pros and cons. What do you think about it?

Pros:

  • Easy and intuitive. I didn't need a manual to teach me how to use it (although I read it anyway and I did watch this video).

  • It breathes. I like that Oliver doesn't rest directly on my chest and belly, and that there's a layer of material between us: it feels like it breathes more and we sweat less.

  • The belt is a back saviour. Just like with mountain backpacks, the belt absorbs most of the weight!

  • Super easy adjustments. I like the way you just have to push or pull strings to improve its fit.

Cons:

  • It's not exactly ergonomic, and that's why I started using it with Oliver when he was around 5 months. When Emily was small, I used the Kari-Me sling.

  • I'd like to have a way of knowing if the adjustment is fine and correct to make sure Oliver is happy in there—some sort of an immediate feedback. Sometimes he cries for a few seconds when I put him in and I don't know if it's because I'm squashing him or he's just protesting.

  • It'd be nice if it opened completely on the back or the front to take it off. Sliding it off always messes my hair (I know, not a big deal!).

  • The front folds easily in the video, but it doesn't seem to stay folded for me. Shall I leave it folded overnight under the weight of some heavy books? ;-) I'm wondering if somebody else has the same problem.

Would I recommend it?

Yes. Out of the carriers I tried, the Babybjörn Carrier One is one of my favourite (another one I like is the Ergobaby).
