Since Emily was little, I noticed that she tended to synchronize her breathing with mine.⁣
When she was sleeping on me, if I felt she was breathing fast, I noticed that I was too, and it was enough to slow down my breathing for her to do the same.⁣
It still works today: when she allows me to hug her during a crisis (what you call “tantrums”), without saying a word, I take very deep breaths, and she calms down a lot quicker.⁣
Breathing is a very powerful tool in managing our emotions and our relationships.⁣
