Recently I overheard this conversation.⁣
Emily, “Oliver, can you tie my laces?”.⁣
Oliver, “Yes, I’m very good at tying knots!”.⁣
I’ve never told him he’s good at tying knots (but I did think it, as he practiced it so much!).⁣
We don’t tell them “Good job” or “Well done”, we don’t praise them. Yet, Oliver and Emily know when they’re very good at something. Why? Because if they’re good at something, kids simply know. They see it. They don’t need adults telling them. Life tells them.⁣
Let’s stop telling children they’re good. Let’s let them decide what they think they’re good at. That’s how we build self confidence.⁣
